Ahhh…the margarita. That tangy lime, triple sec, and tequila concoction with its salty rim and even saltier stories. Whether served on the rocks or blended with ice into a frosty slush, the margarita is the world’s most popular tequila cocktail. Wouldn’t it be great to have a margarita mocktail for sober sippers? Thanks to our margarita mocktail recipe, you can now fiesta without the post-tequila siesta!
Who invented the margarita?
Although the drink’s origin is hard to peg down (was it named after a Mexican dancer, a Mexican-German rancher, a Dallas socialite, or the American singer Peggy Lee?), most historians agree that a 1953 issue of Esquire magazine was the first time the margarita recipe appeared in print. The Esquire margarita recipe was deceptively simple, calling for just three ingredients: an ounce of tequila, a dash of triple sec and the juice of half a lime or lemon (rimming the glass in coarse salt is the unofficial fourth ingredient). No wonder this tequila tipple was an instant hit!

Margarita Mocktail Recipe
Our nonalcoholic margarita recipe uses fresh citrus juice and agave syrup to capture the natural tequila flavor of the margarita cocktail. Because there’s no tequila, lime seltzer is added to create a little burn and bring a pleasant tingle from the carbonation. Because who doesn’t love bubbles?
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/3 cup fresh orange juice
- 1/3 cup light agave syrup
- Coarse salt
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1 cup chilled lime seltzer
Instructions
- Combine the lime juice, orange juice and agave in a spouted measuring cup. Pour into a 12-compartment ice cube tray and freeze until solid, at least 4 hours and up to overnight.
- Pour the salt into a small dish. Dip the rims of 2 glasses in water, then dip the rims in the salt to coat.
- Combine the ice cubes, seltzer and frozen juice cubes in a blender and blend on high until smooth and pourable. Pour into the prepared glasses and serve immediately.
