Where do our coffee beverage trends come from?
We use Tastewise to predict 2025 coffee beverage trends and deliver market leading insights. This social listening platform mines millions of unique data points across social media posts, restaurant menus, online recipes, and more to create a comprehensive picture of what’s heating up (or cooling off) in the food and beverage industry. Two main indicators of a trend’s strength are percent share of social conversations and percent increase in social conversations year over year (YoY).
- Percent Share of Social Conversations: How often a key search term or phrase is mentioned in conversations about a topic, relative to all conversations about that topic. For emerging trends this number will be quite low, as the flavor or ingredient has not gone viral or mainstream yet. This is the time to spot opportunity and be a trendsetter!
- Percent Increase in Social Conversations Year Over Year (YoY): Relative increase in mentions for a key search term or phrase in conversations about a topic. A significant increase YoY means there is more “chatter” around the flavor, ingredient, motivation, occasion, or any of the hundreds of other food and beverage variables. In larger sample sizes, this velocity metric is a good indicator of when a trend is gaining traction.
To uncover these coffee beverage trends, we segmented the database for content that referenced “coffee beverages.” With a sample size of over 1,400,000 people, we are able to gain early insight into emerging trends. Read on for exciting insights in Fruit Flavors, Sweet Flavors, Functional Health, and Consumer Experience.
Indulgent Flavors
Indulgence and comfort go hand-in-hand with the coffee drinking experiences – warm drinks give us warm fuzzies! Maybe that’s why coffee beverage trends for 2025 show increased demand for a new crop of “bakery” flavors. Ladyfinger cookie, coffee cake, sugar cookie, apple pie, and banana bread offer consumers a taste of farmhouse nostalgia. Global dessert flavors such as dulce de leche, churro, mochi, and speculoos are also showing increased share in coffee beverage conversations. Many of these emerging flavor trends trade traditional chocolate and vanilla cues for caramel, spice, butter, and baked fruit. This switch could signal a general swing in consumer taste preference in the year ahead. Traditionalists, don’t despair: there will always be a place for French vanilla and mocha.

Supplement Ingredients
Few traditional beverages have made the functional beverage cross-over as well as coffee. The natural bitterness and bold roasted flavors of coffee are perfect for masking functional ingredient off-notes and tastes. While chicory has the highest relevancy rank to the coffee beverage topic, adaptogenic mushrooms are driving the most significant YoY change. Chaga, lion’s mane, and cordyceps are receiving a lot of attention as coffee beverage supplements – and in some instances, substitutes. Add them to partially or fully decaffeinated flavored coffee to achieve sustained, full-spectrum energy and mental acuity benefits.
L-Theanine is also becoming popular with significant YoY increases in social conversations. L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves. Clinical studies have shown it to be effective at improving mental focus and promoting non-drowsy relaxation. We are seeing this functional ingredient trending in other beverage categories, including mocktails and energy drinks. We hope you try these coffee beverage trends in your 2025 formulations.
Functional Health
Coffee has only recently entered the functional beverage category. This entry that was a long time coming, if current consumer sentiment and sales volume are any indication. While “mental focus” and “energy boost” are the primary function for coffee beverages, we’re seeing an increase in other health needs too. Weight loss drugs is by far the fastest rising functional health claim mentioned in “coffee beverage” conversations. This may indicate its use as either a medicine carrier or as a tool for treating the side effects associated with GLP agonists, such as Ozempic.
While this is exciting YoY change, hormone balance is showing stronger relevance to the topic. When looked at conjointly with menopause symptom relief and bone health, we see an opportunity for women’s health support. Adding female friendly supplements to coffee beverages, while keeping them low in sugar and targeting the weight loss drug market, may be a smart strategy in the year ahead.
Consumer Experience
Drinking coffee is more than an energizing experience for consumers. There are emotional, cultural, and lifestyle drivers that shape consumer expectation of the coffee consumption moment. This year we’re seeing an emerging correlation between coffee beverages and the Tradlife (sometimes referred to as “Tradwife”) aesthetic. Tradlife is a movement that embraces traditional gender-based roles and a return to the nuclear family dynamic. Coffee may be seen as more natural or “cottagecore” when compared to other beverage categories, which could explain the rising connection between the two. Additionally, serenity is showing strong YoY increases with significant topic relevance. Messaging that focuses on home and hearth, family, authenticity, and “me time” can help beverage brands position themselves closer to these experience trends.
